Group therapy training

Build experience and confidence running groups of your own.

After attending Elsbeth‘s group therapy training in 2022, I feel much more informed and confident in adding group work to my private practice this year. I enjoyed the collaborative and experiential format that this training offered and would recommend it to those ready to take the leap into offering a group!

The power of group therapy

In graduate school, and as a young professional, I was a participant in a gestalt therapy group. This was a profound and life-changing experience for me. I had studied group therapy in my graduate training but I found being in a group was much more powerful than learning about it in a class. In doing my own work in group therapy I developed a love and respect for the power of group work. So, for the past 30 years, I’ve offered group therapy as part of my private practice.

Periodically, I lead in-person Group Therapy Training. This weekend program is designed to help you: Offer your clients the benefits of increased social support, relational skill building and practice, trust and intimacy exploration.

  • Learn the ins and outs of running successful groups (group design, marketing, screening clients, keeping full, managing challenging clients, and dealing with disruptive behavior in groups).
  • Identify the specific types of group experiences that would be ideal for your practice (short courses, psycho-educational training groups, time-limited and open-ended process groups).
  • Learn and practice the skills of an effective group leader in a supportive environment.
  • Learn how to communicate expectations and guidelines to group participants.
  • Explore ethical issues that arise in group work.

Group therapy apprenticeshipprogram

Let me offer you personalized guidance and skillful coaching for running successful psychotherapy groups. During the 14-week apprenticeship, you’ll have a chance to observe thriving groups, dissect and discuss their success factors, and identify the essential qualities of a healthy group container.

You will be given a chance to co-lead, and eventually lead, a group and receive feedback and guidance on ways to improve your skillfulness.

Within the 14 weeks, you’ll have six group encounters, sprinkled with six individual sessions with me, along with several written exchanges. Near the end of the apprenticeship, we will discuss your vision of the kinds of groups you want to lead. We will also explore how to market these groups so they fill quickly and remain thriving.

I only have a limited number of apprenticeships available. If you’d like to consider this personalized training, please contact me to schedule an initial phone conversation.

This training is a wonderful blend of didactic and experiential learning about group facilitation. The presentation content and style was interesting and engaging with opportunities to practice and get feedback from the facilitator and group members.
